Home insurance A standard home insurance policy covers property damage caused by certain unintentional disasters. Personal belongings are also covered up to an extent. Additionally, there is personal liability as well, which protects family members from lawsuits related to entry or property damage they may cause to other people. Last but not least, there is medical coverage, which pays for the expenses of non-family members injured on your property.Things to consider when purchasing home insurance:•It is also important to calculate the insurance you need to carry. Home insurance reimburses you for the cost per square foot of rebuilding your home and not the market value of the house.•Figure out how much it would take to replace the contents of your home. You can record them by taking photographs or videotaping the items. If you prefer, you can hire a professional appraiser to help you with the process.•Note that a standard policy has reimbursement limits. Therefore if you own something particularly valuable that exceeds the limit, buy a separate policy for it. You will have to prove its worth with an appraisal.•You can also consider buying additional coverage. Damage from fire or lightning may be covered in standard policies but bear in mind that flooding and earthquakes are not. Hurricanes are generally covered but the floods they cause are normally not included.•Living in an area prone to disasters will make rebuilding costs to skyrocket. North Carolina Car Insurance Requirements North Carolina state law requires minimum Bodily Injury Liability limits of $30,000 per injured person up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum limit of $25,000. This basic coverage is often referred to as 30/60/25 coverage with 30/60 UM limits.Minimum Required Insurance Coverage in North Carolina*Bodily Injury Liability: $30,000/$60,000 Limit Property Damage Liability: $25,000 Limit Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $30,000/$60,000 Limit Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: $25,000 Limit *New limit requirement effective: January 1, 2009 The state of North Carolina follows a Tort system, meaning someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident, and that person and their insurance company is responsible for all the damages. You should be aware that the details of a tort system vary from state to state.To help protect against damages caused to you and your passengers by an uninsured driver, North Carolina state law requires a minimum Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage of $30,000 per person up to a total of $60,000 per accident for any bodily injury caused by the uninsured and/or underinsured driver.In order to obtain your North Carolina Drivers License, you must first have a NC auto insurance policy. The cost of NC auto insurance is based on several factors. The two greatest factors affecting foreign drivers' rates are: 1.) Number of years U.S. driving experience2.) Policy coverages 1.) Number of years U.S. driving experience:In the past, North Carolina insurance companies were able to acknowledge foreign driving experience when issuing insurance. However, recently the NC Rate Bureau revised its rule regarding foreign driving experience.The revised rule states:Only driving experience in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico counts towards years of driving experience.In other words, drivers who only have foreign driving experience will be considered as having NO driving experience and will by default be considered inexperienced operators in North Carolina. An inexperienced operator is required to pay a surcharge based on their number of years driving in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico. This surcharge decreases with each additional year of driving experience, until at three years, the surcharge is removed.Insurance costs are significantly higher for inexperienced drivers.The cost of a NC insurance policy is most greatly affected by two types of policy coverages: Liability (required by NC state law) and Physical Damage (Comprehensive & Collision, or Full Coverage). Liability pays for bodily injury and property damage to others as the result of an accident for which you are at fault. Generally speaking, the cost of liability coverage will not change based on the vehicle you insure. For example, liability insurance for a 1995 Toyota Corolla will cost the same as liability insurance for a 2008 Ford Expedition. Remember, liability pays for damage done to others & others property.The cost of liability coverage is greatly affected by the inexperienced operator surcharge. Physical Damage, also known as Comprehensive (Comp) & Collision (or Full Coverage) will pay for physical damages done to your car regardless of fault. The cost of Comp & Collision depends greatly upon the type of vehicle you insure. For example, Comp & Collision coverage for a 1995 Toyota Corolla will be much less expensive than the Comp & Collision coverage for a 2008 Ford Expedition. Remember, Comp & Collision pays to repair damage done to your car.The cost of Comp & Collision coverage is also greatly affected by the inexperienced operator surcharge.Other optional coverages available on a NC auto insurance policy are Medical Payments, UM/UIM, Towing & Rental Reimbursement. These other coverages are not greatly affected by the inexperienced operator surcharge, are very affordable, and provide great value to the policyholder.

Facts about Term Life Insurance#1: It's the simplest, most straightforward type of life plan.Normally beginning with a physical exam, term life protects families financially following a loved one's death. It pays the recipient of the life insurance funds (beneficiary) the full value of the policy, usually in force from one to 30 years. Most term policies provide no other life benefits.#2: Term insurance comes in two varieties: level term and decreasing term.Level term policies pay out the same benefit amount, no matter when the insured perishes during the term of the contract. Almost everyone buys level term coverage these days. Decreasing term pays varied amounts, depending on the point in the policy when death occurs.#3: Insurers base premiums on age and health at the time the plan begins.These factors represent the best indicators of death risk to the insurance company. Once set, term life insurance rates usually change only if and when the policy is renewed, but stay constant during the span of time designated.#4: Some plans may be converted to permanent policies with no further evidence of insurability.These types of policies are known as "convertible," and cost more than the average term life policy. Find out which term plans are convertible and which are not, as permanent insurance purchased later in life is more expensive.#5: Smokers pay more than non-smokers.About 5 million people die of smoking-related illnesses each year, and smokers are more likely to die of certain types of cancer and cardiovascular disease than nonsmokers of similar age. Universal lifeUniversal life insurance is more flexible than traditional whole life. Your premium payments go into an account that earns a money-market rate of interest, according to the Insurance Information Institute. As that money grows and you get older, you can use it to pay part of your premium.This type of life insurance requires a greater level of personal responsibility than traditional whole life does. Your insurance provider will deduct maintenance charges from your account, and you also need to pay premiums. So, if the premiums you pay in that year plus the interest earned in the account are less than the charges, the value of the account drops, according to the NAIC. If the money in the account runs out, your coverage could end. To keep the account active, you would then have to step up your premiums or lower your death benefits. Variable lifeLike other types of permanent life insurance, variable life offers a death benefit and an investment opportunity. Your premiums are invested in stocks, bonds and money market mutual funds, which can augment the policy's value or deplete it altogether, depending on how your investments perform, according to the Insurance Information Institute. If your investments do well, your savings and death benefit will increase. If they don't, the opposite happens. If you're worried about losing your death benefit, ask for a guaranteed death benefit. You will pay more in premiums for this option, but it can provide peace of mind in the knowledge that your beneficiaries will be taken care of when you're gone. Universal variable lifeUniversal variable life insurance combines the flexibility of universal coverage with the investment options of variable coverage. You can adjust your premium payments and death benefit while making investments along the way. However, with universal variable life insurance, you assume the risks, Nationwide warns. And you must take into account the fees and expenses associated with this type of policy.
